Taraba State has produced another rising sports talent as badminton player Blessing Isaac has been selected to represent Nigeria at the 2026 All Africa Senior Badminton Championship scheduled to take place in February in Botswana.
Isaac, who hails from Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State, secured her place in the national squad after a series of standout performances at tournaments within the state and across the country. Her profile rose further in 2025 when she won a gold medal at the National Universities Games held in Jos, Plateau State, a feat that drew national attention to her growing potential.
Following her selection, the athlete has been invited to join the national camping programme ahead of the continental championship, where she is expected to compete against some of Africa’s most experienced badminton players.
Her achievement was celebrated over the weekend at a send off ceremony held at the Jolly Nyame Stadium in Jalingo. Speaking at the event, the Executive Secretary of the Taraba State Sports Commission, George Haruna Shitta, praised Isaac for her discipline and consistency, describing her selection as a proud moment for the state. He assured her of continued support from the Taraba State Government as she prepares for international duty.
As a mark of encouragement, the Sports Commission presented the athlete with a cash gift and branded sports kits, a gesture officials said reflects the state’s commitment to grassroots sports development.

Also speaking, the State Coordinator of NG Cares, Polycarp Stephen Adi, commended the state government for sustained investment in sports, noting that such support continues to yield positive results. He advised the athlete to remain disciplined and goal driven ahead of the competition.
In her response, Isaac expressed gratitude for the support she has received over the years, revealing that she began playing badminton between 2014 and 2015 and developed through mentorship from her coach and senior players. She pledged to give her best at the African championship, saying she is determined to make Taraba State and Nigeria proud on the continental stage.
