A new research report has revealed that the operations of Tantita Security Surveillance Services are saving Nigeria an estimated $43.2 million daily through the prevention of crude oil theft and improved oil production figures.

The report, authored by Mr. Prezugha Ezon, highlights the impact of the private security firm, which was engaged by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) in 2022 to combat rampant oil theft and pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta.

Since its deployment, Tantita has dismantled illegal bunkering sites, intercepted stolen crude, and tightened surveillance across key oil-producing zones.

According to the study, these interventions have helped Nigeria recover over 600,000 barrels of crude oil per day that would otherwise have been lost to theft.

As a result, daily oil output has increased from around 900,000 barrels in mid-2022 to more than 1.5 million barrels by early 2023, contributing to a massive revenue rebound estimated at $43.2 million daily.

Beyond financial recovery, the report also highlights significant environmental improvements.

The crackdown on illegal refineries and pipeline tampering has led to a decline in oil spills, soot emissions, and pollution of farmlands and water bodies.

Data from the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) shows fewer reported incidents in areas covered by Tantita’s operations.

The research attributes part of the success to Tantita’s community-based security model, which involves local youths, traditional rulers, and ex-agitators in surveillance and intelligence gathering.

This has not only improved the firm’s operational efficiency but also reduced sabotage and fostered peace in host communities.

Mr. Ezon recommended that the federal government adopt Tantita’s model into Nigeria’s broader oil sector security framework.

He called for legal backing, expanded use of advanced surveillance technologies, and stronger collaboration with environmental agencies to sustain current progress in both revenue protection and ecological restoration.
