Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi could face disciplinary action from The Football Association (FA) following his goal celebration during Nottingham Forest’s 3–0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
Awoniyi, who came off the bench, scored the third goal to secure an important win as Forest continue their push to avoid relegation. However, the focus has shifted to his post-goal celebration, which may now attract scrutiny from football authorities.
The 28-year-old was shown a yellow card for removing his shirt, an automatic caution under the Laws of the Game. Underneath, he revealed an undershirt bearing the inscription “God is the greatest,” a gesture that could lead to further sanctions.

According to regulations set by the International Football Association Board, players are not permitted to display political, religious, or personal messages on their clothing or equipment during matches. The rule is designed to maintain neutrality and prevent the game from being used as a platform for individual expressions.
Awoniyi, known for his strong religious convictions and disciplined character, now finds himself at the centre of a regulatory issue that highlights the limits placed on personal expression within professional football.
The FA is expected to review the incident, with potential outcomes ranging from a financial penalty to additional disciplinary measures.
