The Nigeria Taekwondo Federation President, Alhaji Abdullahi Baba, has died aged of 53.
Saidu’s family announced his death after he was taken to the hospital due to a long illness.
He was chosen to head the NTF in October 2021, and has worked hard to promote and grow taekwondo in Nigeria, and throughout West Africa.
Even though he struggled with an undisclosed illness for several years, he remained dedicated to the sport.
Saidu played an important role in helping Nigerian Taekwondo succeed on the world stage. He notably led the team at the 2023 African Games and was a key part of the country’s efforts for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The news of his death has brought great sadness to the taekwondo community.
Bright Kolade, a bronze medalist from the African Games, expressed his feelings, calling Saidu a father figure who offered essential support and motivation to athletes.
“When times were hard, he welcomed me like a son and provided the encouragement I needed. He had big dreams for me, especially since I train kids in Kebbi State who have won junior championships in the country.
“His vision was for taekwondo to not only lead in West Africa but to be a strong force across all of Africa. The late Saidu always prioritized others before himself and made important contributions to Taekwondo since he became President,” Kolade said.
Former NTF President George Ashiru also shared his condolences. He wrote on Facebook, “I am grateful for the wonderful adventures we shared in working towards a united Nigeria and promoting our sport. May your soul find peace.”
“Alhaji Saidu was a skilled sports leader and a devoted athlete who greatly helped the growth of Taekwondo in our country. Our thoughts are with his family during this tough time,” said Bukola Olopade, the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC).
“Mr. Abdullahi Saidu was a dedicated player who contributed to the development of our sport. His efforts and dedication will leave a lasting impact on African taekwondo,” the African Taekwondo Union mentioned in a press release.
