The Kano State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has issued a strong appeal to the state government to declare a state of emergency in the sports sector, citing deep-rooted challenges that threaten the future of athletics and sports development in the region.
Following an emergency meeting of its State Executive Committee, SWAN released a statement signed by Chairman Zaharadeen Saleh and Secretary Muhammad Nur, describing the state of sports in Kano as dire and in urgent need of comprehensive reform. The association highlighted chronic underfunding, poor infrastructure, outdated administrative systems, and a shortage of qualified personnel, particularly coaches, as some of the most pressing issues stalling progress.
SWAN noted with concern the lack of private sector investment and sponsorship, which, combined with mismanagement of available resources, has left athletes and sports administrators disillusioned. The group emphasized that morale within the sector is at an all-time low, and immediate government action is needed to reverse the decline.
The urgency of the situation was further reinforced by the recent deaths of several athletes, coaches, and officials from Kano who participated in the Gateway Games in Abeokuta, Ogun State. SWAN described these individuals as patriots who served the state with dedication and honor, calling on the government to immortalize their sacrifice by naming a major sports facility after them and launching an annual sports event in their memory.

The association also urged the state government to provide immediate support to the bereaved families of the deceased, now referred to as the “Kano 22.” Many of them reportedly left behind dependents, including children and elderly parents. SWAN recommended the provision of scholarships, educational grants, and financial aid to ease the burdens faced by these families, while also advocating for long-term social support systems.
In a broader call for action, SWAN urged the state government to prioritize robust representation at national sporting events, stressing that visible support can significantly boost athletes’ morale and performance. The group also highlighted the plight of Kano Pillars Football Club, calling for an urgent overhaul of the team’s structure and support system to restore its former glory and ensure it remains a vital pillar of sports development in the state.
While commending the state’s role in facilitating participation in the 22nd National Sports Festival, SWAN emphasized the need for consistent and strategic efforts to rebuild the sector from the ground up. The association concluded by reaffirming its commitment to advocating for policies and reforms that would revive Kano’s status as a powerhouse in Nigerian sports.
