The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Rivers State Chapter, has strongly condemned the alleged attack on players and officials of Rivers United FC by fans of Kwara United FC in Ilorin.
The incident reportedly occurred after Rivers United scored a late equaliser to secure a draw in a Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) fixture against the Ilorin-based side.
In a statement jointly signed by SWAN Chairman, Cyril Dum Wite, and Secretary, Comrade Tonye Orabere, the association described the attack as barbaric and unacceptable.
The body called on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the management of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) to investigate the incident, sanction those responsible and impose stricter penalties on the host club for allegedly failing to control its supporters.
“We totally condemn the barbaric and inhuman behaviour meted out on Rivers United players and management team,” the statement read.
“It is unfortunate that this ugly attitude is being displayed at a time the NPFL is receiving commendations both within and outside Africa.
“This ugly trend has no doubt brought the NPFL to disrepute and public ridicule. If not checked, there may come a time when teams will be reluctant to honour away fixtures.”

SWAN also urged club owners across the league to sensitise their supporters on proper conduct during and after matches.
“We are deeply saddened that football, a game meant to promote peace, unity and love, is being overshadowed by violence. This is disgraceful and damaging to the image of the Nigerian league,” the statement added.
The association reiterated the need for improved security and crowd control measures to safeguard players, officials and fans at league venues.
