The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has asked the Speaker of the Rivers state House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule to commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminialayi Fubara.

Ohanaeze made the call following the Supreme Court judgement that stopped the state’s monthly allocation, and restored the seats of the 27 pro-Wike lawmakers.

Applauding the apex court’s verdict, the body said the ruling has ended the prolonged political tension in the oil-rich state.

In a statement issued on Friday by factional Deputy President-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and Chief Chinenyeze Ohia, National Publicity Secretary, Ohanaeze said the judgment represents not just a judicial triumph, but a resounding answer to the anguished prayers of the downtrodden, and impoverished citizens of the state.

The statement ready:”Ohanaeze Ndigbo, in unmistakable terms, and with unwavering resolve, views the Supreme Court’s ruling as a definitive repudiation of the executive recklessness, systemic rascality, and unconstitutional aberrations perpetrated under the administration of Governor Siminialayi Fubara.

“This landmark decision serves as a clarion call for the Martin Amaewhule-led Rivers State House of Assembly, to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara without any further delay.

“Over the past 16 months, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has repeatedly counselled Governor Fubara to cease his unlawful and unconstitutional actions, and to foster harmony with the legislative authority—the Rivers State House of Assembly.

“Regrettably, rather than heed this prudent advice, Governor Fubara opted for actions that not only disregarded the collective interests of the suffering masses, but also undermined the integrity of governance in Rivers State.

“The judgment delivered by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye Agim further substantiated the gravity of Governor Fubara’s misconduct, mandating the immediate reinstatement of the 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to their rightful functions.

“The Supreme Court’s unanimous verdict, rendered by a five-member panel led by Justice Musa Uwani Aba-Aji, meticulously nullified all actions undertaken by the governor as unlawful.

“The court unreservedly criticized Governor Fubara for engaging in the egregious and criminal act of demolishing the House of Assembly, a flagrant violation aimed at obstructing the democratically elected representatives from fulfilling their legislative responsibilities.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo firmly contends that Governor Siminialayi Fubara has perpetrated several impeachable offenses.

“In light of these grave offenses, Ohanaeze Ndigbo earnestly urges Martin Amaewhule, and the other 26 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to summon their collective resolve, and scholarly political will to safeguard the sanctity of Nigeria’s democracy.

“It is imperative that they commence impeachment proceedings forthwith and establish a disciplinary committee, led by the Rivers State chief judge, to ensure that Governor Fubara is held accountable for his unlawful acts, and unconstitutional activities.

“Such measures are crucial not only for restoring the rule of law, but also for safeguarding the welfare, and dignity of the suffering masses and downtrodden indigenes of Rivers State.”
