A street chairman, Mr. Aroghene Ekpenkuru, has been shot dead by unknown assailants at Osadjere street in Ughelli, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.
The incident occurred on Thursday night, shortly after the deceased returned to his residence from watching the football match between Senegal and Egypt, it was learnt.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers allegedly laid in wait inside Ekpenkuru’s house and attacked him immediately he arrived. He was reportedly shot at close range in the neck before the assailants fled the scene.
Residents said the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, but he was confirmed dead while being conveyed for medical treatment.

The killing has thrown Osadjere street and Ughelli into shock and mourning, with residents describing Ekpenkuru as a well-known community figure whose death has created fear and tension in the area.
As at the time of filing this report, the Delta State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
However, local sources disclosed that security operatives have commenced investigations to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing and apprehend those responsible.
The motive for the attack remains unknown.
