Sources said the police officers tracked the stolen phone to a location where a mini supermarket was being opened in the community.

A source who spoke on condition of anonymity revealed that the police had apprehended a suspect who was found with the missing phone.

According to the source, “In the process of the suspect resisting arrest, the police started sporadic shooting and a stray bullet hit Miss Kindness Ogheneweware Austin who was at home.”

The source disclosed that the incident led to those who were at the scene of the event attacking the police, adding that one of the police officers was disarmed.

“The Police later mobilised to the scene to rescue their men who were in the process of being lynched by the angry mob.

“The father of the victim later went to the police station to report the incident but was not allowed to do so as a result of sporadic shooting by the men of the police to scare the irate mob away,” the source said.

At the time of this report, Miss Kindness Ogheneweware Austin was already receiving treatment at Kings View Clinic, Oleh, while the suspect is currently in police custody.

Police Public Relations Officer of the State command, Mr. Bright Edafe, who confirmed the incident, said those that engaged the police in the clash were cultists, disclosing that a Police Corporal was wounded with a battle axe.

He said: “Some suspected cultists did all they could to see that the police does not arrest the said suspect and in the process, used a battle axe on one Police Corporal; he is still in the hospital.”

Edafe also said nobody was shot. “By my report, nobody was shot. If anybody was shot, let the relatives go to the police station to make a report”, he said.
