The Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police, Adaku Uche-Anya has condemned the practice of checking the phones of suspects and transferring money from the phones by police officers.
At a town hall meeting with security stakeholders in the state which took place at the Police Officers Mess in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, Uche-Anya warned men of the state police command against the ugly trend, describing it as criminal.
She noted that the police hierarchy prohibits the checking phones without a warrant.
The police chief provided stakeholders with contact numbers of senior officers to report any infraction by police personnel in the state.

She cautioned the public against taking the laws into their hands or engaging in jungle justice.
Uche-Anya expressed gratitude to the stakeholders, for their cooperation in ensuring the security of the state.
The police commissioner explained that the purpose of the meeting was to assess the command’s performance and identify areas for improvement in service delivery.
The meeting was attended by traditional rulers, representatives of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), market leaders, and other relevant stakeholders.
Our correspondent reports that students of Ebonyi State University, Alex Ekwueme Federal University, and some members of the public, have been complaining of harassment and unauthorized phone checks by policemen in the state and the transfer of monies from their accounts.
