Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has warned youths in oil-producing communities to stop vandalizing oil facilities and other critical infrastructure.

He described such actions as acts of rebellion and sabotage against the government’s efforts to foster economic growth and development.

Speaking through the Commissioner for Youth Development, ThankGod Trakiriowei, at a one-day youth summit on protecting government property and oil facilities held in Warri, the governor stressed the importance of safeguarding these assets as a means of preserving the state’s economic stability.

“Every act of vandalism or oil bunkering is a direct attack on our collective prosperity. These destructive actions not only undermine government’s efforts but also threaten the aspirations and future opportunities of the youths in these areas,” he declared.

Gov. Oborevwori maintained that protecting oil facilities and government property is essential to maintaining Delta State’s leading position in oil production, which directly impacts the state’s economy and the well-being of its citizens.

He called on the youths to take on the responsibility of safeguarding oil facilities, noting that every protected asset has the potential to create jobs and opportunities for the local communities.

The governor also advocated for dialogue in resolving disputes with oil companies, cautioning the youths against resorting to violence.

He said that “no grievance can be resolved through destruction. Dialogue may take time, but it is the only sustainable path to peace and mutual understanding. Let us remember that wars are not won on battlefields but at the negotiation tables.”

Gov. Oborevwori urged the youth to adopt a forward-thinking mindset, recognizing that outdated practices such as free rent and holding oil companies to ransom are counter-productive as they hinder government’s efforts to attract investment and foster a business-friendly environment in the state.

He expressed optimism about the outcome of the summit, highlighting the collective responsibility of all citizens to protect the state’s assets.

“Together, we can safeguard these critical assets, secure our future, and build a Delta State that stands as a beacon of hope for Nigeria. Let us uphold the peace that has made us leaders in oil production and ensure sustainable economic growth for all,” he said.
