The Delta State Government has approved the construction of police divisions across the 25 local government areas of the state in anticipation of the eventual establishment of state police.
The State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, disclosed this on Friday while briefing journalists after the State Executive Council meeting.
Aniagwu said the approval is part of the government’s proactive approach to strengthening security infrastructure and preparing the state for the anticipated implementation of state policing in Nigeria.
According to him, the decision by the Delta State Government to build the facilities ahead of time will ensure that once the policy becomes operational, the state will not struggle with accommodation and operational bases for the new security structure.

He explained that the proposed state police system would operate alongside the federal police, noting that the federal structure would continue to provide the security services it currently delivers.
Aniagwu stressed that the federal police and the anticipated state police would not operate from the same stations because their operational responsibilities would differ, making it necessary to plan separate facilities.
The commissioner said the government was deliberately preparing ahead so that when the policy eventually comes into effect, the state would already have operational structures in place.
He noted that the initiative reflects the state government’s tradition of planning ahead in governance, citing the example of the judiciary, where accommodation was provided for judges before their appointments were made.
Aniagwu added that once contractors are mobilised, the projects are expected to progress rapidly, as the government has consistently ensured that funding for approved projects is not delayed.
