Staff of the defunct Institute of Technology and Management (ITM), Ugep, have staged a peaceful protest in Calabar, Cross River State capital, over the non-payment of their salaries since January.

The protesting staff traveled over 100 kilometers from Ugep to Calabar, and stormed the Government House to press home their demand for the payment of their six-month emoluments.

Upon arrival at the Government House, union leaders held a closed-door meeting with Governor Bassey Otu.

The institution, which was established in 2012, has now been converted to the newly established Federal Polytechnic, Ugep.

However, following the conversion of the institute to a federal institution in January, staff who were told they would be absorbed by the polytechnic have not been paid their salaries since then.

The protesters had earlier appeared before the paramount ruler of Ugep in Yakurr Local Government Area of the state, Obol Ofem Eteng, to plead for his intervention.
