Spanish football legend Sergio Busquets has announced that he will retire from professional football at the end of the Major League Soccer (MLS) season in December 2025, bringing an end to one of the most decorated careers in modern football.
The 38-year-old midfielder, currently playing for Inter Miami, confirmed the decision in an emotional video message posted on social media, saying the time had come to draw the curtain on a journey that spanned nearly two decades. “I believe the time has come to bid farewell to my career as a professional footballer. It has been nearly 20 years of living this incredible dream. I retire happy, proud, fulfilled, and above all, grateful. Thank you all very much, and see you soon,” Busquets said.
Busquets, who began his professional journey at Barcelona in 2005, leaves behind a glittering legacy. He played 722 matches for the Catalan giants, ranking third in all-time appearances for the club. His trophy cabinet includes 32 major titles, with nine La Liga titles, three UEFA Champions League triumphs, and seven Copa del Rey victories.
On the international stage, he was equally influential. With 143 caps for Spain, Busquets was a central figure in the golden era of La Roja, winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and the UEFA Euro 2012. He retired from international duty in December 2022 as Spain’s third-highest appearance holder.

In 2023, Busquets joined Inter Miami, where he reunited with former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suárez, helping transform the Florida-based club into one of the MLS’s most talked-about teams. Under his influence, Inter Miami secured a spot in the MLS playoffs after a 4-0 win over New York City FC, with the postseason kicking off on October 22 and concluding with the MLS Cup Final on December 6.
Busquets’s retirement announcement marks the end of an era, not only for Barcelona fans but for world football. His intelligence on the pitch, composure under pressure, and ability to dictate the rhythm of play made him one of the greatest defensive midfielders of all time.
As football prepares to bid farewell to one of its most consistent and unselfish players, fans across the globe will remember Busquets as the quiet orchestrator of both Barcelona’s tiki-taka dynasty and Spain’s world-conquering team.
