Sokoto State says it spent N4.7 billion over the past two years to help students register for important external exams.
The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Ahmed Ala.
He named the examinations covered to include those organized by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), National Examinations Council (NECO), Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), and the National Board for Technical Education (NABTEB).
Prof. Ala emphasized that the state government wants to ensure that all eligible students can take these tests, regardless of their families’ financial situations.
He said in addition to the examination registrations, the government allocates around N66 million to pay school principals for immediate expenses like minor repairs and maintenance of their schools.
Each principal receives a monthly allowance to help manage these needs.

To support teachers, the government has also increased their salaries to at least N70,000, aligning with the national minimum wage.
Previously, teachers often faced delays in receiving their salaries, but now they can expect to be paid by the 19th or 20th of each month, barring any issues with their banks.
The commissioner said the state government is committed to improving student enrollment and retention in basic education.
To support this goal, the ministry is actively encouraging parents and guardians to not only enroll their children in school, but also to keep them there until they complete their education.
