Prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Abubakar Gumi, has taken legal action against two Facebook users over alleged death threats and defamatory publications linked to his name and image.
Sheikh Gumi filed a criminal complaint before a Chief Magistrate Court in Kaduna State, marked KMD/685/25, on December 24, 2025. The suit names George Udom and Bello Isiaka as defendants.
According to court documents, the defendants allegedly published a Facebook post on December 23, 2025, in which they falsely attributed a violent statement to the cleric. The post claimed that Sheikh Gumi threatened the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, alleging that harm would come to his family if military operations against bandits were not halted.
Sheikh Gumi has firmly denied making such remarks. Through his lawyer, Suleiman Danlami Lere, he told the court that the publication was completely fabricated and deliberately designed to portray him as a supporter of violence and a threat to national security.
The cleric stated that the alleged post has exposed him to grave danger and seriously damaged his reputation, especially given his long record of advocating peace, dialogue and non-violent engagement in addressing security challenges in Nigeria.

The complaint cites several provisions of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law of 2017, under which the defendants may face stiff penalties if found guilty.
Sheikh Gumi’s legal team said the case was intended to send a strong message to social media users who hide behind digital platforms to spread falsehoods and incite hatred. They warned that anonymity on social media does not shield individuals from the law and that defamatory publications would now be challenged decisively in court.
The legal action was made public via a statement posted on Sheikh Gumi’s verified Facebook page on December 24, 2025, with supporting photographs attached.
