Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, has expressed his approval of the airstrikes reported to have targeted terrorist camps in North West Nigeria, but he cautioned that the nation should not rely on foreign countries for its security.
Sani’s comments followed an announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump, who stated that American forces had conducted airstrikes against Islamic State militants in the area, claiming these terrorists were responsible for deadly attacks on civilians.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also confirmed the strikes, noting that the operation was conducted in collaboration with the Nigerian government.
In a response on his verified X account, Sani remarked that if the operation was indeed a joint effort with Nigerian authorities, it was a reasonable and acceptable action.

He pointed out that terrorists operating in various parts of the country pose a significant threat to national stability, describing them as dangerous groups that thrive on violence and destruction.
Sani rejected the notion that terrorist attacks in Nigeria target only one religious group, labeling such claims as misleading and false.
However, he emphasized that Nigeria must take full responsibility for its own peace and security, asserting that while foreign nations can provide support, they cannot fight Nigeria’s battles indefinitely.
His remarks came in light of official confirmations from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Defence Headquarters that the airstrikes were part of ongoing security cooperation between Nigeria and its international partners aimed at combating terrorism and violent extremism.
