In a decisive move to tackle growing insecurity, seven local government areas in Kwara South Senatorial District have ordered the immediate closure of all cattle markets, sparking reactions across the state.
The chairmen of Ifelodun, Isin, Irepodun, Ekiti, Oke-Ero, Offa, and Oyun jointly announced the shutdown on Friday, describing it as a painful but necessary step to protect lives and property. The leaders; Femi Yusuf (Ifelodun), Benjamin Jolayemi (Isin), Azeez Yakub (Irepodun), Gabriel Olawale (Ekiti), James Fadipe (Oke-Ero), Sulyman Olatunji (Offa), and Akanbi Kamar Olarewaju (Oyun), stressed that the measure followed extensive consultations with stakeholders and security agencies.
According to their statement, criminal elements had recently been decimated in coordinated military operations, but mop-up and surveillance activities were still ongoing. To prevent further attacks, all Kara (cattle) markets in the senatorial district are to remain closed from September 19, 2025, until security conditions improve. They also directed that all other produce markets must close by 6:00 p.m. on designated market days.
The chairmen admitted that the shutdown would hurt the economy of the affected areas but insisted that safety must come first. “While we regret the economic impact of this decision on our people, we have chosen to prioritise the protection of lives and properties above short-term inconvenience,” they said.

They further assured residents that the measure would be reviewed regularly, with markets reopening once security is guaranteed. The council bosses also reaffirmed their partnership with the Kwara State Government and security operatives to restore peace in the troubled zone.
“We enjoin everyone to cooperate with ongoing security efforts. Together, we can guarantee the return of lasting peace to our land,” the statement concluded.
