The Seplat Energy Plc has ended a training program for 35 media practitioners in Edo and Delta States on the rudiments of the journalism profession.
The two-day event tagged: Seplat Media Partners Programme: Career and Capacity Development ended in Benin City, Edo State on Friday.
The programme was aimed at exposing the participants to the dynamics of the 21st century reportage, equipping them with the right skills and unlock their potentials in the fast evolving media world.
Addressing the participants while declaring the workshop open, Mr Daniel Aibangbe, Seplat’s Media Consultant said that the training was part of company’s ongoing investment in media development in the country.
Aibangbe maintained that Seplat was committed to equipping journalists with the relevant skills and strengthened collaboration for improved productivity.
Also speaking, a staff of Seplat, Mr Stanley Okpara expressed gratitude to the participants for their turnout and urged them to take advantage of the training to sharpen their skills.
One of the resource persons, Mr Nnamdi Uwaemelulam, urged the media practitioners to always uphold the principles of accuracy, balance and objectivity in their reportage.
“Do not write a report based on people’s opinion but on facts,” he said.
Uwaemelulam spoke on the topics:: “Techniques for Effective Report Writing, The Art of Mobile Video Journalism, and Media Technology: Trends, Importance & Adaptability”.
He enlightened the participants on the proper use of the 5 Ws and H in news writing to ensure clarity, accuracy and credibility.
The media expert urged the participants to take advantage of the various technological platforms to expand their scope by way of creating content and make more money.
He said that there are so much more to do with the apps and software to market themselves.

“Leverage on the various platforms like the Facebook, tiktok, Instagram and others to make good money.
“Those who are doing well today were probably at the bottom but choose to do what others are not doing to become successful,” he said.
Uwaemelulam said that the media practitioners had strategic advantages in view of the evolving era of technology.
He said the media was fast changing, adding that technology had become very important in the industry.
“Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other apps have made the job easier. So writing alone is not enough but having vast knowledge of Tech is very important,” he advised.
Another resource person, Dr. Solomon
Avbioroko, a retired Coca-Cola executive urged the participants to always reflect on their post retirement and plan ahead.
He spoke on the topics: “Self Search: Impacts on Transactional Analysis, Personal Effectiveness: Leading Self: Impacts of Self Knowledge & Self Mastery and The Art of Effective Communication: Handling Barriers in Communication; Effective Listening & Feedback.”
Avbioroko emphasized that qualities such as humility, loyalty and self-discipline were essential ingredients for effective management both at work and at home.
He encouraged participants to represent themselves and their organizations positively wherever they may be, noting that humility was the hallmark of a good leader.
Avbioroko urged the participants to be self determined, noting that no one would sell them better than themselves.
According to him, stories make the best impacts on people and urged them to be creative.
“Be creative and innovative because no one will sell you better than yourself. Be analytical in you writing, honest and reflect on your life everyday,” he said.
Avbioroko described the effective people as the opportunity minded and not the “problem minded individuals”.
He, therefore urged the participants to always think of possible opportunities to explore and become successful in life.
“Let your money work for you and not you struggling for money everyday in your life. Time is an investment strategy, what you do with your time matters a lot to your success,” he said.
Avbioroko said that the logic to success was to start doing something, no matter how small it may be.
He, however, urged the people to be closer to those who knew better than them to tap from their vast knowledge.
Also, Mr Abiola Adedeji, another resource person reminded the participants on the numerous opportunities in the use of technology.
Speaking on the topic: “Understanding Digital Marketing – With a Focus on Social Media”, Adedeji urged the participants to always create contents in the social media platforms to market their product.
“You need to create contents at least twice in a week in any of the social media platforms to always make you relevant,” he said.
Each topic was followed with interactive questions and answers by the participants and the resource person.
