Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, representing Delta South Senatorial District and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Content, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Deputy Governor of the state, Benjamin Elue, who died on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at the age of 85.

Chief Elue served as deputy governor of Delta State from 1999 to 2007 under former GovernorJames Ibori.

During his tenure, he was widely regarded as a stabilizing force in the administration, contributing significantly to the consolidation of democratic governance and institutional development in the state.

In a statement issued on behalf of his family and the people of Delta South Senatorial District, Sen. Joel-Onowakpo, described the late elder statesman as a renowned educator, accomplished businessman, and dedicated public servant whose legacy would endure in the hearts of Deltans.

“Chief Elue was a soft-spoken, kind-hearted and God-fearing leader who embodied humility, loyalty and integrity in public service.

“He played a pivotal role in laying the foundation for democratic stability and progress in Delta State during its formative years in the Fourth Republic,” he added.

The senator noted that beyond his political career, Chief Elue was a respected mentor and father figure to many, whose contributions to education, entrepreneurship and governance left a lasting impact.

From his hometown of Obior in Aniocha North Local Government Area, he was known for promoting peace, unity and community development.

Sen. Joel-Onowakpo extended his condolences to the late statesman’s wife, Lady Esther Elue, his children, the Elue family, the people of Aniocha North, and the government and people of Delta State.

He prayed for the repose of the deceased’s soul and for strength and comfort for the bereaved family during this period of mourning.

Chief Elue’s death marks the end of an era for many in Delta State who remember him as a pillar of integrity and a bridge-builder in both public and private life.
