The Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Shehu Gabam, has opened up about his recent closed-door meeting with former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and allies of ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, in a move that has sparked intense political speculation ahead of the 2027 elections.
The meeting, held at the SDP national secretariat on Tuesday, fueled rumors of a potential political merger as the nation looks toward the next general elections. However, Gabam clarified the purpose of the discussions, emphasizing that they were focused on uniting individuals committed to building a better Nigeria.
“There is no official statement from El-Rufai or any one of them about officially joining the SDP,” Gabam stated. “But they are open to conversations and negotiations aimed at the future of Nigeria. It’s not about a political party; it’s about ensuring a stable and progressive future for the country.”

The SDP chairman highlighted the need for collaboration among like-minded individuals dedicated to uplifting Nigeria and improving the lives of its citizens. He noted that the meeting was just one of many similar engagements with dignitaries from various political parties who are working towards stabilizing the country and offering constructive advice to the current administration.
Gabam also underscored the SDP’s role as a strong opposition party, likening it to the role the All Progressives Congress (APC) played in unseating the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from power. “We don’t have any other objective than to contribute to the nation’s progress. As an opposition party, we are committed to productive dialogue and ensuring a crisis-free Nigeria,” he added.
While rumors of a political merger swirl, Gabam’s remarks suggest that the SDP is positioning itself as a key player in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of 2027. The outcome of these conversations could significantly influence the country’s future direction, drawing attention from across the political spectrum.
This development has already become a hot topic in political circles, with Nigerians closely watching how these high-profile alliances and discussions evolve.
