The Rwandan Ambassador to Nigeria, Ambassador Christophe Bazivamo, has commended the Kano State government for reviving and celebrating Africa’s rich cultural heritage through the maiden edition of the Kano Cultural Festival (KanFest), otherwise known as Kalanguwa.
Speaking on behalf of the foreign diplomatic corps at the event’s opening ceremony in Kano, Ambassador Bazivamo described the festival as a historic moment that restores the important history of Kano in the continent.
He recalled learning about Kano’s prominence as a major centre of trade and culture in Africa, stressing that the festival signifies a renewed commitment to cultural preservation and unity.
“Our roots and traditions are a very strong foundation for sustainable social and economic development,” he said.
Drawing from Rwanda’s post-genocide experience, Bazivamo noted that cultural values of unity, dignity, and reconciliation were instrumental in rebuilding his country.
He urged African nations to harness their shared traditions as tools for collective progress.
The envoy also highlighted the growing partnership between Rwanda and Nigeria, citing several bilateral agreements, including those on aviation, capacity building, and the avoidance of double taxation.
He disclosed that Rwanda Air now operates flights between Nigeria and Kigali, facilitating travel and trade.

He further announced that Nigerians and other Africans can now visit Rwanda visa-free, describing the move as part of efforts to deepen Pan-African cooperation, adding that, Rwanda is committed to working with Nigeria, Ghana, and other African nations in business, tourism, and culture, saying, “we can only be strong if we move together.”
Earlier in his opening remarks, Deputy Governor and Chairman of the organising Committee, Abdulsalam Gwarzo, described the festival as a celebration of Kano’s cultural soul and heritage.
He said the event showcases creativity, promotes unity, and strengthens the economy through tourism and cultural industries while inspiring younger generations to preserve indigenous traditions.
The KanFest, hosted by Governor Abba Yusuf, brought together local and international dignitaries, while showcasing the various cultural displays and colourful horse parades among others.
