Former Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has resigned from his post as manager of League One side Derby County with immediate effect.

Rooney, who broke the news on Friday in a meeting with the club’s joint administrators Quantuma, said that he has followed the development of the club and felt it is best to take a leave.

While Quantuma has lamented over the decision stressing that the joint administrators have appealed to former England forward to rescind his decision.

According to the 36-year-old statement, Derby needs someone who has new energy and determination to add flare to the club.

He said, “I feel the club now needs to be led by someone with fresh energy and not affected by events that have happened over the last 18months.”

Rooney, who has followed the club’s development regarding ownership, promised the fans and the people of Derby County that they will always occupy a special place in his heart.

“I will remember my time at Derby with great pride and affection and would like to thank all my staff, players and of course the fans for their incredible support,” he said.

“I will never forget you and hope to see you all again in the near future and in happier times,” he promised.

However, Quantuma conceded that Rooney’s decision is devastating but the club understand the reasons behind his decision.

He added that although the joint administration spent time trying to persuade the former Everton player to stay with the club, the Rams are grateful for all he did during last season’s challenging period.

“The joint administrators are very disappointed that Wayne has taken the difficult decision to leave the club and we have spent some time today trying to persuade him to stay but understand his reasons for wanting to go,” Quantuma said.

“We are extremely grateful to him for his excellent work in the face of challenging on-field circumstances in the 2021-22 season and admire the manner in which he has led the team, the club and the local community through various off-field issues,” he added.

Rooney, however, disclosed that he understands that new parties are interested in taking over the running of the club, adding that it is a welcome development for the Rams with great fans and rich football history.
