The deceased policemen were said to have been in the bullion van of a commercial Bank in the state.

Confirming the report, the state police command, through its Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nafiu Abubakar, said apart from the policemen, other persons were as well involved in the fatal accident.

He said, “On the 27th of September, 2022, there was a fatal motor vehicle accident/fire incident along Argungu/Birnin Kebbi road, involving a bank bullion van and four other vehicles and a motorcycle.”

The accident, according to him, occurred “when a Carina E car, carrying jerry cans of PMS was suspected to have been pursued by a Nigeria Customs Service patrol team from Birnin Kebbi.”

On getting to Jeda village, the Carina E car, he said, had a head-on collision with the bullion van, “as a result, burst into flames and consumed three other cars.”

A total of five vehicles and one motorcycle, the command said, were burnt to ashes, adding that “six people including three policemen also died in the inferno.”

Apart from the number of deaths recorded, five other persons, as further confirmed by the command, were said to have sustained various degrees of injuries.

At the time of filing this report, those that escaped with various degrees of injury, the police said, are currently undergoing medical attention in the Federal Medical Center (FMC), Birnin Kebbi.

On receipt of the report, the PPRO said the Commissioner of Police, Kebbi State Command, Ahmed Magaji Kontagora swiftly rushed to the scene.

A thorough investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident, the commissioner said, would be carried out by the command.
