The Rivers State chapter of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, under the umbrella of *Ogbakor Ndi-Igbo Na Rivers*, has officially declared its intention to produce the next President-General. This comes in the wake of the passing of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the 11th President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

The push for a Rivers State candidate is rooted in Article 11 of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Constitution, which mandates rotational leadership among the seven member states. In a communiqué issued after a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, the group reaffirmed its commitment to constitutional adherence and unity within the organization.

The communiqué was signed by Livingstone Wechie, Convener of Ogbakor Ndi-Igbo Na Rivers, and Barrister Anthony Okolo, National Coordinator of Anyi-Anyi, a pan-Igbo advocacy group.

“We strongly believe that adherence to the Constitution is the key to ensuring a peaceful, prosperous, and united Ohanaeze Ndigbo,” Wechie emphasized.

The Rivers State chapter highlighted its significant contributions to Ohanaeze Ndigbo over the years, noting that its members have served in key roles such as Deputy Secretary-General, National Financial Secretary, Secretary-General, and Deputy President-General.

“Rivers State has proven its dedication to the growth of Ohanaeze, and we believe it is time for us to lead,” Wechie said, urging stakeholders to support the state’s claim to the presidency.

With elections for the next President-General scheduled for January 10, 2025, the Rivers chapter has called for a transparent and fair electoral process. The group stressed the importance of unity and inclusivity for the future of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

Barrister Okolo warned that ignoring Rivers State’s claim could undermine the Igbo identity in the region. He also announced plans for a symposium on December 7, 2024, to discuss leadership transition and strengthen Rivers State’s position.

The symposium, spearheaded by Anyi-Anyi, aims to unite stakeholders and rally support for Rivers State’s bid. It will be followed by town hall meetings and consultations to solidify the state’s case.

Okolo urged the Rivers State Police Command to ensure security during the event, emphasizing the need for a peaceful process.

“This program will culminate in a communiqué asserting Rivers State’s right to produce the next President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo,” Okolo concluded.
