The Rivers State council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has elected new officials to pilot the affairs of the union for the next three years.
The election earlier slated for January
16, 2025 was inconclusive following disagreements on the harmonization of positions between the two camps contesting.the election.
The two camps are led by Paul Bazia and Ogboka Umeda, of the state Ministry of Information and state television, respectively.
The stalemate in the election led to the constitution of a caretaker committee which held forte until the election on Monday
At the end of the election, Paul Bazia polled 144 votes to beat Ogboka Umeda, who polled 140 votes for the chairmanship position.

Ijeoma Tubosia clinched the position of secretary with 165 votes to beat Obiandu Madume, who polled 177 votes. Tubosia thus becomes the first female secretary of the union in the state.
Daba Benebo emerged as the treasurer, while Bartholomew Ndubuwa also clinched the position of assistant secretary. Daba got 164 votes, as against Bartholomew, who ganered 144 .
In his acceptance speech after taking the oath of office, Bazia pledged to reposition the NUJ by introducing radical reforms that will make the union the envy of other unions in the state.
He pledged to run an all inclusive administration, which will accommodate an advisory council made up of former officials of the council as well as sustain the hallowed place of the Elders Council.
