The Rivers State Government has expressed deep concern over the poor response to refuse evacuation across the state.

In a statement on Tuesday by the Senior Special Adviser, Media to the Administrator, Hector Igbikiowubo, the government issued a stern warning to contractors responsible for waste management to immediately improve their performance or face severe consequences, including contract termination.

The government emphasized that contractors who fail to meet their contractual obligations in evacuating refuse promptly and efficiently will have their agreements revoked “with extreme prejudice.”

” This decisive action underscores the administration’s commitment to maintaining a clean, healthy, and aesthetically pleasing environment for all residents

“As part of ongoing efforts to improve refuse handling, the Rivers State Government has reactivated an abandoned burrow pit to serve as an additional waste disposal site. Additionally, steps are being taken to upgrade the burrow pit along the Airport Access Road, ensuring better waste management capacity and operational efficiency.

“These measures are designed to address the growing waste disposal challenges in the state and ensure that refuse is properly managed in line with global best practices”, the statement noted.

The government urged all residents to dispose of their waste responsibly by using designated dumping sites and adhering to proper waste disposal methods that preserve the environmental beauty and hygiene of the state.

The statement further encouraged citizens to report any uncollected refuse that remains unattended for more than 48 hours to the appropriate authorities.

It said the move will enable swift government intervention and ensure that contractors are held accountable for lapses in service delivery.

The Rivers State Government reaffirms its zero-tolerance policy toward inefficiency in public service delivery, particularly in critical sectors like waste management.

“The administration remains committed to enforcing strict compliance with contractual terms and will not hesitate to blacklist and replace underperforming contractors where necessary.

“A clean and well-maintained environment is a shared responsibility between the government, service providers, and residents.

“The Rivers State Government calls on all stakeholders to play their part in ensuring that Port Harcourt and its environs remain clean, safe, and sustainable for present and future generations”, the statement urged.
