The Nigerian Senate has appointed Senator Ede Dafinone of Delta Central into a powerful oversight committee to monitor the actions of the state’s embattled Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd.). The appointment, announced during Tuesday’s plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, comes as part of the Senate’s renewed push to ensure transparency, accountability, and democratic governance in the volatile oil-rich state.
The newly formed 17-member committee, chaired by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, is tasked with scrutinizing the activities of the Sole Administrator whose emergence has sparked controversy and public debate across the region. Senator Dafinone’s inclusion in the panel is seen as a strategic move, given his background in public accountability and legislative activism, making him a key figure in the Senate’s mission to stabilize Rivers State’s governance structure.
Akpabio, while unveiling the list of appointees, stressed the committee’s critical role in restoring public trust and preventing executive overreach in the state. He described the assignment as urgent and central to upholding democratic norms in Rivers, adding that the Senate may review the committee’s composition after further consultations with stakeholders.

The formation of the committee, which includes prominent senators such as Adamu Aliero, Osita Izunaso, Simon Lalong, Adams Oshiomhole, Ireti Kingibe, and others across party lines, underscores the Senate’s bipartisan approach in resolving the lingering governance crisis. The inclusion of Labour Party senator Ireti Kingibe also signals the upper chamber’s commitment to inclusivity in addressing national concerns.
Senator Akpabio directed the committee to swing into action immediately, making it clear that the Senate will not stand by while constitutional processes are undermined. With Senator Dafinone’s appointment, the red chamber is sending a strong message that Rivers State cannot afford further instability, especially as political tensions threaten to derail development efforts in the state.
This latest move by the Senate is expected to calm nerves, reshape the political narrative in Rivers, and reassert legislative oversight as a necessary pillar of good governance in Nigeria.
