The Rivers State Elders and Leaders Forum on Friday, hailed the reconciliation and peace deal struck between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike

In a statement signed by the acting Chairman of the forum, Gabriel Toby, the forum described the development as a “welcome return to unity and maturity in leadership.”

The statement expressed gratitude to God and President Bola Tinubu for facilitating the peace process, which offers a renewed chance for progress and stability in Rivers State.

The forum recalled its earlier efforts to mediate the political crisis between the two leaders and the Rivers State House of Assembly, expressing regret that their initial calls for dialogue were not heeded, which necessitated their appeal to the president for intervention.

“It was a sad development that deeply wounded the soul of our dear state and cast an undeserved shadow on our collective image, unity, progress, and prosperity,” the statement read.

While the forum commended the reconciliation, it noted that though the specific terms of the agreement remain undisclosed, it expressed the hope that the peace deal is constitutionally grounded and adheres to the principles of the rule of law.

Reaffirming its neutrality, the forum emphasized that its only interest has always been the welfare of Rivers State and not political gain.

“We seek no personal gain, political favour, or reward. Our sole desire is to see our state thrive,” it stated.

The forum urged the federal government to lift the state of emergency imposed on the state and ensure the full restoration of all suspended democratic structures.

“The will of Rivers people should be respected, and the institutions of democratic governance must be allowed to function freely and transparently,” it added.

The statement passionately called to all citizens and political actors in Rivers State to view this moment as a new beginning, one defined by mutual respect, unity, and a shared commitment to rebuilding the state.

“Let Rivers State rise again in pride and purpose. Let us never forget that our strength lies in our unity, shared heritage, and destiny,” the forum declared.
