A deeply personal and public appeal by Mrs. Regina Akume, member of the House of Representatives for Gboko/Tarka federal constituency, has set social media abuzz after she urged her husband, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, to fully return to Christianity, declaring that his success in life was built on his Christian faith.

The appeal was captured in a video that has since gone viral, recorded during the wedding reception of the SGF’s son on Sunday in Makurdi, Benue State. The event also came barely days after Senator Akume marked his 72nd birthday, adding emotional weight to the moment.

In what began as a birthday prayer, Mrs. Akume asked God to grant her husband long life, sound health, and wisdom in leadership. She then delivered a pointed message, reminding him of the spiritual foundation she said shaped his journey to national prominence.

She told the gathering that Christianity was central to her husband’s rise, warning that turning away from the faith would have serious consequences. According to her, abandoning Christianity to pursue other paths would not bring success.

Addressing him directly, the lawmaker urged the SGF to return to the teachings of Christ and remain steadfast in the faith that, in her words, carried the family to the highest levels of public service.

She said their journey to national leadership was not achieved through any other power or influence but through Jesus Christ, whom she described as still alive and actively working in their lives. She expressed the hope that her husband would come back fully to Christianity and walk the path of Christ.

The remarks have sparked intense public debate, especially against the backdrop of ongoing discussions about Senator Akume’s personal life. In recent weeks, social and conventional media have been filled with reports alleging that the former Benue State governor recently married another wife, said to be a prominent figure within Nigeria’s royal and elite social circles, identified as Her Highness, Queen Zaynab Ngohemba-George Akume Dajoh.

While the SGF has not publicly addressed the reports, the timing and content of Mrs. Akume’s comments have fueled speculation and widened conversations about faith, marriage, and leadership in Nigeria’s political space.
