The House of Representatives has moved to criminalise dual membership of political parties with a proposed amendment to the Electoral Act.
Under the proposed changes, any individual found to be a member of more than one political party at the same time could face a fine of ₦10 million, a prison sentence of up to two years, or both.
Lawmakers approved the amendment during Wednesday’s plenary, saying the measure is aimed at strengthening internal discipline within political parties and improving transparency in the country’s political system.

According to members of the lower legislative chamber, the proposed provision seeks to address the increasing trend of politicians maintaining affiliations with multiple parties simultaneously.
They argued that the practice weakens party structures, undermines accountability and creates instability within the political system.
The lawmakers noted that criminalising dual party membership would help enforce clearer political allegiance and encourage adherence to party rules.
