The House of Representatives has postponed its plenary session, earlier scheduled to resume on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, pushing the date to Thursday, March 5, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.
The decision was communicated in an internal memorandum dated Monday, February 23, 2026, and issued by the acting Clerk of the House, Mr. Ibrahim Sidi.
The memo titled: “Notice of Postponement of Plenary Session,” cited the incomplete 2026 budget Defence sessions as the reason for the adjustment.
According to the memorandum, the ongoing budget defence by Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) remains substantially unfinished, necessitating additional time for standing committees to complete their scrutiny of the proposals.
“In light of the ongoing 2026 budget defence by Ministries, Departments and Agencies, which remains substantially incomplete, the leadership of both Houses hereby directs the postponement of plenary sittings to allow committees conclude their budget defence accordingly,” the memo stated.

The leadership acknowledged the inconvenience the postponement may cause but urged lawmakers to use the extended period to deepen deliberations and strengthen contributions to the budget review process.
The development underscored delays in the legislative consideration of the 2026 Appropriation Bill, as committees continue engagements with government agencies over expenditure proposals.
Spokesman of the House, Rep. Akin Rotimi, who signed the statement, reiterated the commitment of the green chamber to what he described as a transparent and comprehensive review of the national budget in the interest of Nigerians.
