The House of Representatives has directed its relevant committees to investigate the recent communal clashes between residents of Iguelgba, Oben, Ikobi, and Obazogbe-N’ugu communities in Edo State and the people of Mosogar in Delta State.

This followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance moved on Tuesday by Rep. Billy Osawaru, who represents Orhionmwon/Uhunmwode Federal Constituency of Edo State.

Rep. Osawaru told the House that the communities in Orhionmwon Local Government Area had lived peacefully along the Edo-Delta boundary since the states were created in 1991, until the recent outbreak of violence allegedly triggered by an “unprovoked incursion” from Mosogar.

“The people of Iguelgba, Oben, Ikobi and Obazogbe-N’ugu have lived peacefully within the oil exploration areas of Orhionmwon without fear or harassment,” he said.

“But recently, thugs and hoodlums allegedly from Mosogar led an unjustified attack on our communities.”

The lawmaker warned that if not contained, the situation could escalate into a full-blown interstate crisis, posing a threat to national peace and security.

“If serious action is not taken to stop this incursion, it may snowball into a full-scale interstate crisis, which will threaten the peace and stability of the nation,” he cautioned.

Following the motion, the House mandated its Committees on Special Duties and National Security and Intelligence to investigate the incident and report back within four weeks.

It also urged the police, army, and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) to take immediate steps to restore peace and protect lives and property in the affected areas.

Additionally, the House called on the Edo and Delta State governments to intensify dialogue and take swift action towards resolving the dispute amicably.
