The House of Representatives has condemned the killing of 16 travellers in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State, describing the attack as a grave violation of human rights.
In a statement issued by the House Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., the lawmakers acknowledged the directives from President Bola Tinubu and the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, instructing security agencies to investigate the incident.
The House urged law -enforcement agencies to ensure that all those responsible are swiftly identified, arrested, and prosecuted.
Describing the killings as “barbaric, cowardly, and unacceptable,” the House stressed that such acts of violence have no place in a society that values the sanctity of life.
“It is deeply disturbing that in our nation, fellow citizens can be subjected to such heinous violence, especially when our faith traditions teach us to honor the sanctity of every human life,” the House stated.
It called for calm and urged Nigerians to avoid actions that could escalate tensions.
Also, the House emphasized the need for collective efforts by security agencies, community leaders, and citizens to prevent future occurrences of mob violence.
The House further highlighted the need for a national conversation on mob justice, extra-judicial killings, and ethnic profiling, which threaten the country’s peace and unity.

The lawmakers called on security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering and response mechanisms to prevent similar incidents.
They also urged community leaders, religious institutions, and the media to promote mutual understanding, civic responsibility, and legal awareness.
Reaffirming its commitment to justice, the House vowed to advance legislative measures that safeguard the lives and dignity of all Nigerians.
“Mob violence, extrajudicial killings, and ethnic targeting have no place in a civilised society,” the statement read.
The House extended condolences to the families of the victims and pledged to ensure that those responsible face the full weight of the law.
