The Ndigbo Unity Forum (NUF) has called on President Bola Tinubu to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, as a step toward resolving the ongoing crisis in the South-East region.
The group believes that Kanu’s prolonged detention has exacerbated unrest in the area, including the disruptive Monday sit-at-home protests, which have severely impacted the economy and education.
In a statement jointly signed by its President, Augustine Chukwudum, and Secretary-General, Tony Igbokwe, the group detailed the extensive financial losses and academic disruptions suffered by the South-East due to the recurring protests.
The statement also criticized past administrations for ignoring repeated calls from prominent Igbo leaders to secure Kanu’s release, arguing that his detention has turned a previously peaceful region into one grappling with escalating challenges.

The NUF suggested forming a high-profile delegation of South-East leaders, including governors, lawmakers, traditional rulers, and influential women leaders, to meet with President Tinubu and negotiate Kanu’s release. The group expressed confidence that such a move could de-escalate tensions and foster a return to stability in the region.
Additionally, the organization urged South-East governors to focus on regional development by investing in key sectors such as security, agriculture, and infrastructure. Highlighting the region’s vast potential, the group emphasized that prioritizing agricultural initiatives could unlock significant revenue and improve livelihoods.
The statement added that this renewed appeal comes amidst growing frustration over the federal government’s handling of issues affecting the South-East. By addressing the root causes of unrest, the Ndigbo Unity Forum believes the region can return to a path of peace, economic growth, and educational progress.
