Social media activist, Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, stirred controversy when he claimed that his non-governmental organisation’s account was fully funded and that there was never any missing N180 million.
In a video shared on X (formally Twitter), he explained that he orchestrated the apparent disappearance to illustrate his belief that “80 percent of people who use social media are dumb.”
Otse expressed satisfaction in revealing how easily people are misled, noting that he quickly shut down his website to demonstrate the gullibility of the public, who he felt were more interested in scandal than seeking evidence.
Reactions to his claims were mixed. @PeterRosary criticized his actions, arguing that financial credibility is crucial, especially for those entrusted with public funds.
He said: “Financial credibility is a good thing. You can’t be entrusted with public funds and you decide to catch trips with it. People asked how can a website hold N180 million.”
@illuminathor was more skeptical of Otse’s explanations, labeling him foolish for expecting people to believe his story after initially claiming the money was missing.

He said: “This #verydarkman is a stupid person. Why will I not believe you when you say money is missing?
You said it with your mouth . Now, you’re here again saying another thing after you have run around to beg for money and now come back to say rubbish”.
@the_babaD pointed out that while many Nigerians are active on social media, this does not necessarily reflect a high level of intelligence or awareness.
“Nigerians are easily swayed, This is to show you the level of our iQs. The fact that we are all on social media doesn’t mean we are on the same level of intelligence/ awareness. Una really no de think @thatverydarkman fooled all of you, not me,” he said.
@d_mamza said: “Nigerians and celebrity worship syndrome…We allow people get away with inexcusable behaviour all in the name of mindless fanatism”.
