Disengaged staff of the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KAEDCO) on Wednesday staged a protest at the company’s headquarters in Kaduna over the alleged non-payment of their benefits estimated at ₦175 million.
The protesters, who blocked the main entrance to the company, carried placards with inscriptions such as “Umar Abubakar Hashidu, pay us our exit token and entitlements,” and “Governor Uba Sani, you mediated this matter — we have confidence in you.”
Security operatives were deployed around the premises to prevent a possible breakdown of law and order, as journalists were barred from accessing senior management officials for clarification.
Speaking to reporters, the leader of the protesters, Mohammed Sani, representing the Zaria zone, said the disengaged staff had agreed with KAEDCO management that all outstanding payments would be settled by October 27, 2025, without fail.
“Anything contrary to what we agreed with the managing director and management last year will not be accepted,” he said.

Sani expressed frustration that despite repeated assurances, the company had failed to provide a full breakdown of individual benefits.
“We still don’t know our total entitlements. They promised to send our payment advice through official emails within 24 hours — up till now, we haven’t received anything,” he lamented.
According to him, some staff had received partial payments, but the process remained inconsistent and opaque.
“One of our junior staff got ₦300,000 today, after receiving ₦347,000 last week. Another received ₦841,000, in addition to ₦400,000 earlier. We don’t understand the criteria,” Sani said.
“This is our right, not a favour. The company disengaged us voluntarily, and the condition of service clearly defines what we are entitled to.”
He also accused KAEDCO of failing to remit pension arrears owed to former staff into their respective accounts, adding that several affected employees had died waiting for their benefits.
“Some of us worked for 10 years without a single promotion. Nobody even knew their grade level in this company,” he added.
The protesters appealed to Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, to intervene once again, recalling his earlier mediation between the unions and the company in February.
“We’re calling on Governor Uba Sani, the national labour leadership, and the people of Kaduna to take note — we won’t give up our rightful benefits,” the group declared.
