Hundreds of protesters on Wednesday took to the streets , calling for the closure of a nightclub allegedly linked to Nigerians amid rising tensions over immigration and crime.

The demonstrators targeted California Tavern, accusing the establishment of involvement in drug-related activities. One of the protest organisers, alleged that illegal substances were being sold at the venue.

The protest comes days after similar demonstrations by anti-immigrant groups, reportedly sparked by the controversial “crowning” of a Nigerian community leader in the area.

Last week’s unrest saw several Somali-owned businesses looted and vehicles set ablaze, heightening fears among immigrant communities. On Wednesday, many foreign-owned shops in the city centre shut down as a precaution, while police maintained a strong presence to prevent further violence.

Tensions escalated when protesters attempted to gain entry into the Belgrave Hotel, which houses the nightclub. Police officers intervened, blocking access and dispersing parts of the crowd.

Police spokesperson said officers were deployed to ensure safety and prevent damage to property. “We have a responsibility to protect everyone,” she stated, adding that law enforcement had previously confiscated drugs in the area during routine patrols.

In a later update, they confirmed that some individuals involved in criminal acts during the protest were dispersed using stun grenades and rubber bullets.

She added that one suspect had been arrested for assaulting a police officer and would appear in court, while authorities have opened 11 criminal cases related to last week’s unrest, with two additional arrests made.

Meanwhile, management of the Belgrave Hotel announced that California Tavern would be shut down, a move likely to ease tensions as authorities continue to monitor the situation.
