President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially announced the passing of Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, who died on the night of November 5th, 2024, in Lagos after a prolonged illness. Lt. General Lagbaja, a pillar in Nigeria’s military leadership, was 56 years old.
The announcement was made via a statement from Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, expressing deep condolences to the Nigerian Armed Forces and Lagbaja’s family during this time of mourning.
Lt. General Lagbaja’s career in the Nigerian Army began when he enrolled in the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987. Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps on September 19, 1992, as part of the 39th Regular Course, he consistently exhibited unwavering dedication and exemplary leadership throughout his years of service.

During his career, Lagbaja was a vital force in several critical military operations across Nigeria. His leadership as platoon commander with the 93 Battalion and 72 Special Forces Battalion led him to play instrumental roles in high-stakes security missions, such as Operation ZAKI in Benue State, Lafiya Dole in Borno, Udoka in Southeast Nigeria, and Operation Forest Sanity across Kaduna and Niger States. His strategic insight, especially in internal security, solidified his reputation as a formidable military leader.
An alumnus of the prestigious U.S. Army War College, Lt. General Lagbaja also held a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies, underscoring his commitment to professional growth and military excellence.
Lt. General Lagbaja leaves behind his wife, Mariya, and their two children. President Tinubu, in his message, honored Lagbaja’s dedication and service, calling his passing a “significant loss” to the nation.
