President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described Alhassan Yahaya’s election as President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) as a clear demonstration of journalists’ confidence in his leadership capabilities.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Saturday, Tinubu congratulated Yahaya on his victory during the 8th Triennial National Delegates Conference held in Owerri on November 27, 2024.
The President also extended his commendations to the newly elected executive members of the NUJ, praising the union for organizing a smooth, rancor-free election. Tinubu called on other unions nationwide to emulate the NUJ’s approach to democratic processes.
“Yahaya’s extensive experience, including his tenure as the union’s Deputy President, positions him to effectively lead the Fourth Estate of the Realm toward new heights,” Tinubu noted.

Tinubu emphasized the critical role of the media in nation-building, urging journalists to uphold their constitutional duties with renewed dedication and patriotic zeal. He highlighted the press’s significant influence in achieving the vision of Nigeria’s founding fathers by promoting democracy and fostering unity.
The President reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to maintaining a free and independent press as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s democracy and a driver of national prosperity.
“President Tinubu expects Yahaya’s tenure to reflect a stronger adherence to journalism ethics while fostering collaboration with the government to build a just and equitable society,” the statement added.
Tinubu expressed confidence in the NUJ’s new leadership team, wishing them a successful and impactful term.
