The Office of the Vice President, in partnership with the North East Development Commission (NEDC), has launched an intensive in-person training for 150 secondary school teachers in Borno State. This initiative, part of the Accelerated Senior Secondary Education Program (ASSEP), is aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The two-day training, which began on Monday at the Education Resource Centre in Maiduguri, targets teachers from both public and private secondary schools in the MMC and Jere Local Government Areas. It aims to improve teaching skills in critical areas such as science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and agriculture (STEMA), equipping educators with tools to prepare students for a rapidly evolving world.

Mahmud Muhammad, Personal Assistant for Domestic & North-East Affairs in the Office of the Vice President, emphasized the initiative’s importance for educators across the six North East states, including Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Taraba, Adamawa, and Gombe. “This training is designed to enhance teaching skills, benefiting both educators and students,” Muhammad stated, highlighting the role of Vice President Kashim Shettima in championing ASSEP as a transformative education initiative.

Muhammad also praised the efforts of Dr. Mariam Masha, Senior Special Assistant on Regional Development to the President, and the NEDC for their commitment to educational progress in the region, despite security challenges.

The ASSEP program builds on an earlier online training session that introduced teachers to advanced pedagogical methods through the One-Million Teacher program. Lead facilitator Mr. Oluwagbenga Gbenga Ojo expressed confidence that this hands-on training would equip teachers to guide students in effective writing, clear communication, and modern learning techniques.

The ASSEP Focal Person, Suleiman Abba Sheriff, encouraged participating teachers to embrace this opportunity to reverse the declining quality of education in the region. “This program is a powerful step towards restoring and enhancing education in the North East,” he said, urging teachers to apply their new skills and insights in their classrooms.

Supported by the NEDC, ASSEP’s focus on STEMA underscores a long-term commitment to human empowerment and educational transformation in the North East. The Borno State government, under the leadership of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum and the Commissioner of Education, Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe, has also been recognized for its ongoing efforts to strengthen education infrastructure in the face of regional challenges.

This ASSEP initiative marks a bold step forward in addressing the pressing needs of Nigeria’s educational system and preparing the next generation for a future built on knowledge, resilience, and opportunity.
