In the bustling city of Warri, Delta State, a heart-wrenching story of survival unfolds as 33-year-old pregnant widow, Mrs. Gift Eddy, works tirelessly as a laborer to feed her children. Despite being heavily pregnant, she carries heavy loads at a construction site behind the Word of Life Bible Church in Enerhen, Warri, all in a bid to make ends meet.

With sweat dripping down her face and her visibly swollen belly, Mrs. Eddy shared her painful story. “I don’t have a husband. He is late,” she said, taking a short break from lifting head-pans filled with construction materials. “I came to work on Sunday because there’s no food at home. Life is hard.”

Mrs. Eddy, a mother of three with another child on the way, lost her husband recently. Now, she faces the overwhelming task of providing for her children—two daughters and a son—all while grappling with Nigeria’s rising inflation, skyrocketing food prices, and soaring fuel costs.

She is from Oyede Community in Isoko North Local Government Area, Delta State, Mrs. Eddy refuses to sit idly by. “I cannot sit down doing nothing. My children need to eat, and they need to go to school,” she said with determination. Despite her physical challenges, she continues to work hard every day, knowing that each day is a fight for survival.

“It’s hard,” she lamented. “Would I ordinarily be doing this kind of job? No. But I have no choice.”

As she prepares to welcome her fourth child, Mrs. Eddy’s situation grows even more desperate. She is in urgent need of support to provide for her family. “I need help,” she pleaded. “Anybody can help—well-meaning Nigerians, and the Delta State Government, please come and help me.”

Her cry for assistance echoes the voices of countless Nigerians facing similar struggles. Despite the immense challenges, Mrs. Eddy remains resolute in her mission to ensure her children have a future, even if it means carrying the weight of her burdens, both physically and emotionally, on her own.
