Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, widely known as Portable, has come under intense criticism after a viral video captured him making remarks many observers have described as threatening in relation to the 2027 general elections.

In the video, which surfaced online on Sunday, the singer appeared to urge Nigerians to support Bola Ahmed Tinubu, warning of possible unrest if his message was ignored. The comments, delivered in a mix of street slang and local expressions, have since triggered widespread reactions across social and political circles.

Portable also suggested links with the All Progressives Congress, claiming he had received party-branded items and assurances of rewards. The claims have further fueled debate over the growing involvement of entertainers in partisan politics.

Civil society groups and political analysts have strongly condemned the remarks, arguing that they move beyond personal opinion into rhetoric that could be seen as coercive. Many have warned that such statements risk heightening tensions in an already sensitive political climate as the country gradually approaches another election cycle.

Critics also expressed concern over the alleged use of cultural and traditional references to sway public opinion, noting that such messaging could deepen divisions and undermine democratic values. They stressed that political participation must remain free, voluntary, and devoid of intimidation.

The controversy has once again drawn attention to the increasing influence of celebrities in shaping political discourse in Nigeria. While public figures command large audiences and can mobilise support, analysts say their words carry weight and must be handled with caution.

As reactions continue to pour in, the incident has reignited calls for greater responsibility among influential figures, especially in matters that touch on national unity, electoral integrity, and public peace.
