Edo State has been thrown into political turmoil following the suspension of two top officials in Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration over alleged financial misconduct. The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Samson Osagie, and the Chairman of the Edo State Local Government Service Commission, Hon. Damian Lawani, were both suspended with immediate effect on Thursday, February 5, 2025.
A letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ikhilor, confirmed the governor’s decision, citing “grave official and financial infractions” as the reason for their suspension. The statement further revealed that a committee has been set up to conduct a thorough investigation and provide recommendations. Until the probe is concluded, both officials will remain suspended from office.

The shock announcement has sparked widespread debate, with various reports emerging about the possible reasons behind the decision. One major allegation links the suspension to controversial deductions from local government accounts, allegedly used to fund legal services related to an ongoing lawsuit justifying the removal of local government chairmen months ago.
In his reaction, Hon. Samson Osagie vehemently denied any wrongdoing, expressing shock and disbelief over the accusations. He dismissed the claims as baseless and insisted that he was never confronted with any allegations before the suspension was made public.
“I was never involved in any financial dealings with anyone nor committed any financial infraction of any kind,” Osagie stated, vowing to defend his name and reputation against what he described as an unjustified action.
The suspension of these key figures has only added to the growing political tension in Edo State, raising questions about internal power struggles and the direction of Governor Okpebholo’s administration. With investigations underway and accusations flying, the coming weeks could determine whether this move was a bold stand against corruption or a deeper political chess game.
