The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has condemned the mob assault of a young woman accused of stealing a two-year-old child in the Gwagwalada area of Abuja, warning residents against taking the law into their own hands.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday, October 13, 2025, saw an angry crowd descend on the woman, beating her severely before officers from the Tungan Maji Division intervened and rescued her from being lynched.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao S. Adewale, strongly condemned the act of jungle justice, describing it as both criminal and unacceptable.
According to the statement, the police chief emphasized that mob action not only violates the law but also risks punishing innocent people who may later be found blameless.
“Jungle justice is a criminal act and will not be tolerated under any circumstances,” CP Adewale was quoted as saying. “Taking the law into one’s hands is unlawful and often leads to the punishment of innocent persons who may later be found blameless.”
The police said a discreet investigation has already commenced into the alleged child theft, assuring the public that justice will be served “in accordance with the law.”

CP Adewale also warned that the Command would not hesitate to arrest and prosecute anyone found participating in mob violence, noting that such behavior undermines the rule of law and ongoing efforts to maintain peace and order in the FCT.
“The Police will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute anyone involved in mob attacks,” he said. “Such actions undermine the rule of law and frustrate collective efforts to ensure peace and security in the territory.”
The Command urged residents to report any suspected criminal activity or suspicious movement to the nearest police station instead of resorting to mob action.
It also provided the following emergency contact numbers for reporting incidents:
📞 08032003913, 08028940883, 08061581938, 07057337653
or the Police Control Room at 09115629111.
The FCT Police Command reiterated that security is a shared responsibility, calling on residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in promoting a safe and lawful environment.
“We urge all residents to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding. Together, we can maintain a peaceful and safe society,” the statement added.
