The Imo State Police Command has warned residents of the state capital, Owerri, that the ban on the activities of commercial motorcycles would be strictly enforced by the police as violators of the ban will be arrested and prosecuted.
Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Henry Okoye, in a press statement, stated that the order to ban commercial motorcyclists takes immediate effect, warning that anyone who violates the ban will be arrested and their motorcycles impounded.
Okoye explained that the measure is part of the ongoing efforts by the state government to enhance security and reduce crime within the Owerri metropolis.
The state police spokesperson, hinted that the ban is specifically aimed at curbing criminal activities which he said have been facilitated by the use of motorcycles.
In addition, Okoye pointed out that the measure seeks to alleviate traffic congestion within Owerri city, and ultimately foster a safer and more efficient environment for all road users.
He therefore urged residents of Owerri and commercial motorcyclists to comply with the law, warning that police operatives will continue to strictly enforce the ban, while violators will face appropriate legal action.
“Citizens are encouraged to support these efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone,” Okoye stated.
