Following their promise to support victims and combat gender-based violence, Nigerian police have come under fire for failing to provide justice to a 17-year-old girl who was allegedly raped at Ogudu police station in Lagos by a police superintendent named Owolabi Akinlolu, as well as for dismissing Inspector Edith Oduma for reporting the rape of a female suspect in custody in Edo State.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Nigeria Police Force, along with other governmental and non-governmental organisations, will commemorate 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
However, X users have criticised the force for failing to prosecute the accused police officer who allegedly offered to assist the alleged victim in tracking down and recovering her stolen phone but instead raped her.
It was alleged that the command fired Oduma and demoted her husband, Insp. Ibrahim Mohammed, because they revealed one of their colleagues, Sergeant Abraham Uzuobor, who reportedly raped a female suspect in detention.

These numerous incidents have infuriated social media users, who are wondering why police officers are attacking people, especially women, and why the command has pledged to reduce gender-based violence but the victims have not been given justice. “The same police that fired a police officer for exposing a police officer raping an accused person in a police station,” @IOshowa stated.
“You are all hypocrites,” stated @attahjos15, “but you illegally fired the police officer who revealed a fellow officer had raped a girl in Edo State’s custody.”
@olasukami said “Where are the reports about the females who were defiled by your guys and officers? Did they end up in prisons? Which are the prisons? An excellent illustration occurred at the Lagos State police station in Ogudu. Stop pretending to be who you are not. You are anti women, anti masses, and anti democracy”.
@solomin4jesus lastly stated “your men can rape women right in your stations that are in their custody and further connived with rapists to burry rape crime.”
