The Delta State Police Command on Tuesday staged a walkathon in Asaba as part of activities marking the 2026 National Police Week, in what authorities described as an effort to promote peace, visibility, and public safety.

The exercise, which began at the state police headquarters on Okpanam Road, saw officers trek to the Stephen Keshi Stadium and back, a distance of about 3.2 kilometres, alongside similar events held across the state’s nine area commands.

According to the command, the walkathon was aimed at reassuring residents of the police’s presence within communities and projecting readiness to respond to security challenges.

It also served as a demonstration of personnel’s physical fitness.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner of Police in Delta State, Yemi Oyeniyi, said the initiative reflects a commitment to community-oriented policing, in line with this year’s Police Week theme: “Community Partnership: Building Trust.”

He urged residents to collaborate with the police by providing useful information and reporting concerns, assuring that the command is prepared to address issues “professionally and promptly.”

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Bright Edafe, confirmed that the walkathon formed part of broader engagements planned for the week-long activities across Delta State.
