The Lagos State Police Command has restored calm at Tejuosho Market Phase II in Surulere after violence erupted when a group posing as protesters attacked traders and vandalized property under the guise of demonstrating against power outages.

Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday. He said the unrest broke out on Thursday around 2:30 p.m. after officers received a distress call about hoodlums assaulting traders, damaging property, and confronting security operatives in the market.

According to Oluseyi, the attackers vandalized sections of a local bank and even assaulted police officers deployed to maintain order. However, swift intervention by the Mobile Police Force prevented further destruction and safeguarded both the bank and the police post within the market.

Lagos Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olohundare Jimoh, immediately deployed reinforcements, including specialized tactical units, to the scene. The team dispersed the attackers and arrested 18 suspects linked to the violence. The police say investigations are ongoing to track down other culprits still at large.

Normal business activities have since resumed at Tejuosho Market, with traders and customers assured of safety. Oluseyi noted that the situation is under control, urging residents to go about their daily activities without fear.

The Commissioner of Police warned against further attacks on security personnel, stressing that violence against officers or destruction of property would not be tolerated. He urged residents to support law enforcement and report suspicious activities through the Command’s emergency hotlines: 07061019374, 08065154338, 08063299264, and 08039344870.

With calm restored, the police reiterated their commitment to protecting lives, property, and ensuring that Lagos remains safe for business and daily life.
