The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two suspected kidnappers and armed robbers believed to be terrorizing several communities in the state. The suspects, who are reportedly members of a notorious secessionist group, were apprehended during a joint operation involving the military, civil defense, and other security forces.

The suspects, whose names are being withheld, have been linked to a series of kidnappings, car thefts, and armed robberies across Uga, Ekwulobia, Umuchu, Nkpologu, Ezinifite, and Aguata communities. These remote areas have recently witnessed a surge in violent crimes, causing widespread concern among residents.

According to a statement by Anambra State Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the arrests were made on Thursday following a thorough investigation into a kidnapping incident reported in Aguata in 2023. The investigation revealed that the suspects were deeply involved in various criminal activities, all under the guise of a secessionist agenda.

One of the suspects was found with bullet wounds on his leg, likely sustained during a previous encounter with law enforcement. The other suspect, shockingly, posed as a pastor, allegedly preparing criminal charms to protect the gang members. This so-called “pastor” has confessed to his role in the crimes and is cooperating with authorities to help apprehend other members of the gang.

SP Ikenga further disclosed that the suspects have provided valuable information about the location of a shrine where these criminal charms were prepared, as well as details on some of the vehicles they had snatched. This intelligence is expected to aid in the further dismantling of the criminal network operating in the region.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, has reassured the people of Anambra State that the police are fully committed to addressing all reported cases of kidnapping, armed robbery, and other violent crimes. “The trust bestowed on us for the protection of life and property is not taken for granted,” he stated, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to ensure safety and security across the state.

This latest development has brought some relief to the affected communities, where fear and tension have been palpable due to the recent crime wave. The successful arrest of these suspects is a significant step forward in restoring peace and order in Anambra State.
